Stay Safe During the Heatwave: Important Advisory from Chandigarh Administration

As temperatures rise, the Chandigarh Administration has issued a public health advisory to help residents stay safe during the heatwave. It's crucial to take necessary precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones from heat-related illnesses. Here's a breakdown of the advisory:

Do's:

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water at regular intervals, even if you don't feel thirsty. Carry water with you when you travel. Opt for hydrating beverages like lemon water (Nimbu Pani), Lassi, Chaach, Jaljeera, Aam Panna, coconut water, or other natural drinks available locally. Include seasonal fruits and vegetables with high water content in your diet, such as watermelon, muskmelon, cucumber, orange, and lettuce.
  • Stay Covered: Avoid direct exposure to the sun. Stay indoors in well-ventilated and cool places. Wear thin, loose-fitting cotton clothes, preferably in light colors. Protect your head with an umbrella or hat. Always wear shoes or sandals when stepping out in the sun. Keep windows and curtains closed during the day and open them at night to allow for cooler airflow.
  • Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Regularly check on those who are at a higher risk during extreme heat, including infants and young children, pregnant women, outdoor workers, individuals with mental illness, people with physical illnesses (especially heart disease or high blood pressure), and elderly or sick individuals living alone.

Don'ts:

  • Avoid going out in the sun unless absolutely necessary.
  • Refrain from strenuous activities outdoors, especially during the afternoon when the sun is at its peak.
  • Steer clear of alcohol, tea, coffee, and carbonated soft drinks or sugary beverages, as these can lead to dehydration or stomach cramps.
  • Do not consume stale food.
  • Never leave children or pets unattended in parked vehicles.

By following these simple yet crucial guidelines from the Health & Family Welfare Department of U.T. Chandigarh, you can significantly reduce the risk of heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses. Stay informed, stay hydrated, and stay safe during this heatwave.
