Globalisation means close interaction between different countries of the world. It has brought faster growth, higher living standards and new opportunities for individuals and nations. Improved communication and exchange of technology have connected people across continents. However, globalisation also has its dangers. It has led to the spread of crime, narcotics, terrorism and diseases. The benefits of globalisation are not equally distributed. While some people worry about stock markets and profits, millions still struggle for food, safe drinking water and shelter. Internal wars in many poor countries have caused fear and destruction. The Earth is also suffering due to deforestation, pollution and over-consumption of natural resources. According to an old African wisdom, the Earth is a treasure that we hold in trust for future generations. Therefore, we must learn to govern better and ensure freedom from want, freedom from fear and protection of the environment.

Water is the foundation of food and life. Nearly three-fourths of the Earth’s surface is covered with water, yet only one percent is fit for drinking. Most of the water is salty ocean water, while a large portion of fresh water is frozen in glaciers. Civilizations grew on the banks of rivers because people had easy access to water. Today, rising population and growing industries have increased the demand for water. In many regions, groundwater levels are falling sharply. Forests help in conserving water as vegetation allows water to seep into the ground slowly. If we continue to waste and pollute water, a day may come when life on Earth becomes impossible.
