The last solar eclipse of 2025 will take place tonight, marking a partial solar eclipse visible in parts of the Southern Hemisphere. While skywatchers in India will miss out on direct viewing, the celestial event is expected to attract global attention as it unfolds late on Sunday night and extends into the early hours of Monday.
Timings of the Eclipse
According to astronomers, the partial solar eclipse will begin at 10:59 PM (IST) on September 21 and continue until 3:23 AM (IST) on September 22. The peak of the eclipse, when the Moon covers the largest portion of the Sun, will occur at 1:11 AM IST.
For international observers, the timings correspond to 1:29 PM EDT (Eastern Daylight Time).
Where Will It Be Visible?
This eclipse belongs to the Solar Saros 154 series and will be visible across regions of the Southern Hemisphere. The best views will be experienced in Antarctica, New Zealand, parts of eastern Australia, and Pacific Islands, where nearly 80–86% of the Sun may be obscured.
Unfortunately, India will not witness the eclipse, as the event will occur after sunset in the subcontinent. Astronomy enthusiasts in India can, however, follow live streams hosted by various observatories and space research organisations.
What is a Partial Solar Eclipse?
Unlike a total solar eclipse, in which the Moon completely covers the Sun, a partial solar eclipse occurs when the Moon only covers part of the Sun’s surface. This creates dramatic visuals, with the Sun appearing as a crescent or partially obscured disk. In areas with greater coverage, daylight may dim noticeably, offering a unique spectacle.
