SECTION – A (Reading Skills) [Marks: 10]
1. (a) Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
Water is a vital resource that is essential for human survival. It is necessary for drinking, cooking, cleaning and growing crops. However, with the increasing global population and climate change, the demand for water is rising, while the supply is dwindling. This has led to a severe water crisis in many parts of the world. To address this issue, it is crucial to adopt effective water conservation strategies. One of the most significant ways to conserve water is to reduce waste. Leaks, overflowing toilets and inefficient appliances can waste a substantial amount of water. For example, a single dripping faucet can waste up to 20 gallons of water per day. Fixing leaks and installing low-flow fixtures can save a significant amount of water. Additionally, using water-efficient appliances and turning off the tap while brushing teeth can also make a big difference. Another way to conserve water is to harvest rainwater. Rainwater harvesting involves collecting and storing rainwater for non-potable purposes such as flushing toilets, washing clothes and watering plants. This can reduce the demand on municipal water supplies and decrease the amount of storm water run-off. For instance, a typical household can collect and store up to 10,000 gallons of rainwater per year, which can be used for various purposes. Furthermore, water conservation can also be achieved through sustainable agriculture practices. Techniques such as drip irrigation and mulching can reduce water usage and increase crop yields. Moreover, using drought-resistant crops and implementing crop rotation can also help conserve water. In conclusion, water conservation is critical for ensuring a sustainable future. By adopting simple habits and practices, we can make a significant impact on the global water crisis.
