Chandigarh, December 19, 2024: The State Election Commission, Punjab, has declared December 21, 2024 (Saturday), as a public holiday in the jurisdiction of Municipal Corporations and Councils where general and bye-elections are scheduled. The decision aims to facilitate voters in exercising their franchise.
### Key Highlights:
1. Public Holiday Notification
Punjab Government offices within the concerned municipal areas will remain closed under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. Schools serving as polling stations will also observe a holiday.
2. Special Leave for Employees
Government and private employees residing in areas holding elections will be granted special leave to cast their vote. This leave applies even if they work outside the jurisdiction.
3. Close Day" for Businesses
Establishments such as shops, factories, and industries in polling areas will observe a "Close Day" under the Punjab Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1958, and the Factories Act, 1948.
4.Dry Day Declaration
December 21 has also been declared a "Dry Day" in the municipal election areas, prohibiting the sale and distribution of liquor.
5. Exam Postponements
Educational institutions like Guru Nanak Dev University, Punjabi University, and Punjab University have rescheduled exams originally planned for December 21 to December 31, 2024.
