Schools in Kinnaur District Closed Due to Heavy Snowfall Threat
**Reckong Peo, Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh – February 27, 2025** – In response to a severe weather forecast predicting heavy snowfall, Dr. Amit Kumar Sharma (IAS), District Magistrate of Kinnaur, has ordered the closure of all government and private schools, pre-schools, and Anganwadi centers in the district for February 28, 2025.
The decision, made under Section 34 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, comes after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Shimla issued a warning of a moderate-intensity wet spell accompanied by heavy snowfall in the region over the next two days. Reports from the Deputy Director of Higher/Elementary Education and Field Revenue Agencies highlighted the hazardous road conditions due to continuous snowfall, posing a significant risk to student safety.
Kinnaur District is particularly vulnerable to heavy snowfall, avalanches, and landslides, which can disrupt transportation and essential services while endangering lives. The closure aims to prevent potential loss of life and property.
The order, issued on February 27, 2025, will affect all educational institutions in the district, including those affiliated with HPBOSE, CBSE, and ICSE boards.
The District Magistrate has also forwarded copies of the order to key officials, including the Chief Secretary of Himachal Pradesh, the Education Secretary, and the Superintendent of Police, Kinnaur, among others, for necessary action and dissemination.
