Punjab Government Orders Safety Checks for School Buses Following Fatal Accident in Haryana
The Punjab government has ordered mandatory safety checks for all school buses in the state following a fatal school bus accident in the neighboring state of Haryana on Thursday. The accident claimed the lives of several school children.
The orders were issued by the Punjab Chief Secretary's office on Friday. The directive instructs Deputy Commissioners and Commissioners of Police/Senior Superintendents of Police to ensure that all school buses in their respective jurisdictions are checked for the following:
- Fitness certificate
- Registered seating capacity
- Functional speed governor
- Valid driver's license
- Compliance with the Safe School Vahan Scheme
The directive states that strict action will be taken against schools and bus owners who are found to be violating these norms. The deadline to complete the safety checks and submit a report to the Chief Secretary's office is April 30, 2024.
