In the beginning of the 19th century, the position of women in Indian society was pathetic. **Sati Pratha**, in which widows were forced to burn themselves on the pyre after the death of their husband, was a horrific custom in society. This practice not only ended the lives of women but also negated their importance in society. **Raja Ram Mohan Roy** raised his voice against this injustice. He explained to people that Sati Pratha was not compatible with human rights. He worked with the British Government and got Sati Pratha declared illegal in 1829. This reform gave women a new life and strengthened their security in society. Raja Ram Mohan Roy also advocated for women's education and social equality, which helped redefine women's rights.

- II. What were the **bad effects** of Sati Pratha on the lives of women? (2)
- III. Write about the contribution of **Raja Ram Mohan Roy** in eradicating social evils. (2)
Source B: Economic Justice (Civics)
**Economic inequality** means—some people having too much wealth and others lacking even basic necessities. This inequality is not just limited to income but also affects education, health, employment, and life opportunities. When some people in society are living a life of luxury and others cannot meet their needs even after working day and night, this inequality creates social tension. The government runs several schemes to reduce economic inequality, such as MGNREGA, free food grains, and financial help for education, etc. But these schemes can only be successful when their implementation process is transparent and reaches the people. Social justice is impossible without economic justice.
