The **Indigo Rebellion** (1859-1860) was a major peasant uprising in Bengal against British indigo planters. The peasants were forced to cultivate indigo instead of food crops, often under fraudulent contracts and at very low prices. This system, known as **Dadni**, made the farmers indebted to the planters, leading to immense poverty and exploitation. The rebellion was largely non-violent, marked by the refusal of farmers to sow indigo, and was a powerful instance of peasant unity against colonial economic tyranny.
