Passage 1: The Mahabharata

The Mahabharata is a story about the Pandavas and the Kauravas and the great war that they fought for the throne of Hastinapur. King Pandu was the king of Hastinapur. He was a brave man and a wise ruler. The kingdom became rich under him, but he did not rule for many years. When he died, his eldest son was too young to rule. So Dhritarashtra, who was Pandu's brother, became the king. Dhritarashtra was blind. He had a hundred sons, who were known as the Kauravas. The five sons of Pandu were known as the Pandavas. They were - Yudhisthir, Bheem, Arjun, Nakul and Sahadev. Yudhisthir, known as Dharamputra, was very wise. Bheem was very strong. Arjun was a great warrior. Nakul and Sahadev were twins. Duryodhana was the eldest of the Kauravas. The Pandavas and the Kauravas grew up together in the palace at Hastinapur. They played and studied together. They were cousins who disliked each other from the beginning and the rivalry between them intensified as they grew older. Passage 2: Thomas Edison

At sixteen years of age, Thomas Edison found himself alone. He wandered for several years from town to town and from job to job. He was often hungry and usually poor but always full of ideas. Some of his ideas led him into trouble, but he never despaired. He spent all his earnings on books, tools and chemicals and he longed for the day when he would have his own laboratory and time to experiment with his ideas that seethed in his brain. When he was twenty two, his vision came true. He invented a telegraphic printer and put it up for sale. He expected to sell it for a fairly large amount of money, but he was utterly amazed at the offer he received. It was forty thousand dollars! He could hardly believe it. Forty thousand dollars! Now he could start doing the big things. So he bought small laboratory machinery and chemicals. Essentially in a short span of time the laboratory proved to be too small. For Edison the basic target was to simply pour inventions out into the world and soon he employed a staff of two hundred and fifty men to help him. He improved the telegraph, typewriter and the telephone. Edison's experiments with the telephone and the telegraph led to his invention of the phonograph in 1877.
