Punjab State Election Commission Announces General Elections for Gram Panchayat 2024
Chandigarh, 22 September 2024( ਜਾਬਸ ਆਫ ਟੁਡੇ) The State Election Commission of Punjab has issued an important notice regarding the upcoming Gram Panchayat elections in the state. In a memo dated 22 September 2024, addressed to all Deputy Commissioners, the Commission emphasized the urgency of the elections for the offices of Gram Panchayats and Sarpanches.
The notice refers to a previous letter from the Department of Rural Development and Panchayats, dated 20 September 2024, which provided guidelines for conducting the elections and issued notifications dated 16 September and 19 September 2024. It also highlighted the importance of ensuring reservation of seats for Sarpanches as per the Panchayati Raj Act and associated rules. Read in Punjabi
Deputy Commissioners have been directed to ensure that the reservation of offices of Sarpanches is published in the Official Gazette. Furthermore, they are required to promptly send a copy of the published notification to the Election Commission via email.
This move sets the wheels in motion for the 2024 Gram Panchayat elections, with preparations now in full swing across the state. The directives aim to ensure the elections are conducted efficiently and in compliance with the legal framework.
The memo was signed by the Secretary of the State Election Commission, Punjab, and also forwarded to the Secretary of the Rural Development & Panchayats Department for necessary action.
Punjab Govt. Announces Gram Panchayat Elections to be Held by October 20, 2024

This announcement was made through a notification issued by the Department of Rural Development and Panchayats on September 19, 2024.

The notification, No. S.O.48/P.A.9/1994/S.209/2024, specifies that the decision has been made under the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 209 of the Punjab Panchayati Raj Act, 1994 (Punjab Act 9 of 1994). The act grants the Governor of Punjab the authority to direct such elections.
