Punjab & Haryana High Court Sets Aside 50% PG Marks Condition for Principal Promotions
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has taken action regarding eligibility criteria for promotion to the post of Principal in Punjab schools. Petitioners challenged a government letter dated 4 November 2025 that imposed a minimum 50% mark requirement in Post Graduation for the General category and 45% for reserved categories for promotion to the Principal cadre.
Government Withdraws the Controversial Letter
During the hearing, the State informed the court that the 04.11.2025 letter had been withdrawn on 01.12.2025 and a copy of the withdrawal was produced in court. With the withdrawal, the petitioners did not press the challenge against the marks condition.
Departmental Examination Issue
The petitioners pointed out that although passing a departmental test is mandatory to become eligible for the post of Principal, the Education Department has not conducted any such examination so far. They asked the Court to direct the State to hold the departmental test at the earliest.
Court Directions
The Court directed the State to treat the present petition as a formal representation regarding the holding of the departmental examination and to consider and decide the same within two months from receipt of the certified copy of the order. The petition was disposed of without commenting on the merits.
