In a statement released earlier today, the MHA addressed a proposal currently under consideration by the Central Government. The statement stressed that the proposal's sole intent is to "simplify the Central Government’s law-making process" for the Union Territory.
What the Proposal ISN'T: Key Reassurances
The PIB explicitly stated several key points to reassure stakeholders, particularly the States of Punjab and Haryana:
- No Alteration to Governance: The proposal will *not* in any way alter Chandigarh's current **governance or administrative structure**.
- Traditional Ties Remain: It does *not* aim to change the **traditional arrangements** between Chandigarh and the States of Punjab or Haryana.
- No Immediate Legislation: The Central Government has **no intention** of introducing any Bill to this effect in the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament.
Consultation is Key
The Ministry emphasized that no final decision has been taken yet, and a suitable resolution will only be adopted after **adequate consultations with all stakeholders**, ensuring the interests of Chandigarh are kept in mind.
This announcement serves to significantly ease any concerns about an imminent shift in the UT's status or the delicate balance in its administration shared between the two states. For now, the administrative and traditional status quo of Chandigarh remains firmly in place.
